Culprits of $100million Paris Jewelry heists imprisoned

  • PARIS, Feb. 28 (UPI) -- Eight men accused of twice robbing a jewelry store in France for millions of dollars in merchandise were handed varying prison sentences Saturday. The ringleader of the group, 50-year-old Douadi Yahiaoui, was sentenced to 15 years while others were given sentences as low as nine months.
The two heists on a Harry Winston jeweler in Paris netted the crew up to $100 million in merchandise. In 2007 the first heist was perpetrated by four men dressed as construction workers. The second came in 2008, with three of four robbers disguised in women's clothing and wigs.
Most of the stolen goods were never recovered, but in 2011 police discovered about $19 million worth of jewels from the 2008 heist stuffed down a drain in a Parisian suburb.
The Harry Winston incidents were only two in a series of jewelry heists in France throughout the years, including when $136 million worth of jewels were stolen from an exhibition in Cannes, France, in July 2013.

4 Ways to Get Free Money From Your Employer

By: Crypto Dina On: 2:39:00 PM

  • Participate in the Retirement Plan

Most employers have instituted either a type of 401(K), 403(B), or IRA. The idea behind getting more “free” money out of this system is by allotting at least as much money as your employer would match; especially a great plan for those whose employers offer attractive percentages. For example, if you make $50K a year and put $1,500 in your 401(k) annually while your company matches you up to 6% of the annual salary, your employer will only give you $1,500. But, if you were to give $3,000 (or more), your employer will give you a total of $3000.
In fact, it is generally considered a good idea to put as much as possible into your retirement plan because you get to defer taxes on your immediate salary and because the salary you will get as a retiree will be much lower, the taxes taken out at the time will be lesser since your income will be in a lower tax bracket. Plus, there is always the chance that the taxes will be at much lower rates in the future.

Go for the High Deductible Insurance Plan + Health Savings Account

Going for a high deductible plan means that you will be saving a lot of money on paying the premiums; a great option granted you are healthy and do not have major chronic illness(es) as these plans require you to pay huge amounts for your medical bills before insurance coverage kicks in. For the most part, you want to get a plan that comes with a Health Savings Account (HSA); especially a great idea if your employer will match on contributions towards this account – however, they are not obligated to do so. These accounts practically work the same as a savings account and are 100% tax deductible. You want to put in the maximum amount annually allowed in this account; “HSA holders can choose to save up to $3,350 for an individual and $6,650 for a family (HSA holders 55 and older get to save an extra $1,000 which means $4,350 for an individual and $7,650 for a family)” (hsacenter.com). It’s one of the best ways to save money from going towards taxes and securing your future from any drastic medical emergencies that may occur (especially during retirement). Just keep paying small medical bills out of your own pocket!

Look into a Flexible Spending Account (FSA)

FSA account is one of the easiest ways to capitulate on tax free income. They are placed for medical or childcare expenses and all money put into this account is 100% tax deductible. All you have to do is calculate the estimated amount of money you would need for out of pocket health expenses and/or for dependent care; the maximum contribution limit for health care is $2,550 and $5,000 for dependent care. With all this tax free money set aside, all you have to do is make sure you put it to use because any money unused is considered forfeited – unless your employer gives a grace period. The trick here is to get as close to the estimate as possible so you can use the untaxed money righteously.

    Look into Company Stocks

If your company is offering you stocks, see if you will get a discount or if your employer will match your contribution; this is one of the biggest/best perks. This is especially a great strategy if your company performs well in the market; being you are the employee, you will have better knowledge of how well, or not well, your company performs. Of course like any investment in stocks, you want to take the most precautions and perhaps might even want to cash out on a high note if possible; investing in your own company doesn’t have to be emotional bond. Diversification is the key when playing in stock market so you may not want to rely solely on your company’s stock for your stock market endeavors. It is usually advised that individual investments be less than 10% of your overall portfolio.
It should be kept in mind that although these ways are a great way to either get more money or more out of your money, you can minimally impact your social security savings because the portion of the money that would go into such service will now not be in lesser amounts overall.

Horny Woman Calls 911 And Asks Officer For Sex

  • A Florida woman called police and then came onto the responding officer, asking him for sex. Maria Montanez-Colon, 58, was arrested for abusing the 911 system when she called police with a bogus story, and when an officer arrived she tried to have sex with him.
The woman told police that she gave her late husband’s convertible to his son while she was drunk, and that she wants the car back. When officer Justin Davoult of the Punta Gorda Police Department arrived at the house, Montanez-Colon allegedly fondled him.
She then asked the officer if he was married and allegedly proceeded to rub the officer’s chest. The woman then told Davoult that he was sexy and that she wanted to have sex with him because she didn’t have sex in years.
However the officer wanted no part of it and left. Montanez-Colon then called 911 again and asked for another officer.
When the dispatcher asked why she wanted another officer, she explained that the officer turned her down and that made her angry. Officers responded to Montanez-Colon’s home, but this time, they arrested her for misuse of 911.
She was and booked into the Charlotte County Jail. Officers said that Montanez-Colon was intoxicated at the time of the incident.

Sunlight continues to damage skin hours after exposure

  • Sunlight continues to damage people's skin and increase the risk of cancer for hours after they leave the beach and head indoors, a study shows.
Scientists at Yale University, in the US, discovered it was the supposedly protective pigment melanin that was causing the damage.
The team say the findings may lead to better sunscreens that can prevent the extra damage.
British experts said that the findings "reinforce" current advice.
When UV radiation pummels our skin cells, it can cause mutations in the DNA.
Melanin, the pigment behind a tan or natural skin tone, is the body's defence as it absorbs the radiation.
What scientists did not know previously was what happens to all the energy that the melanin has absorbed.
Super-charged The Yale team showed, in the journal Science, that the high-energy version of melanin supercharges a series of chemical reactions.
A cocktail of superoxides and peroxynitrites culminate in a "very high-energy molecule breaking apart and releasing the energy that was holding it together", said lead researcher Prof Douglas Brash.
He told the BBC News website: "It's what happens in fireflies when they [use the energy to] produce light and glow, except the energy is just transferred to the DNA."
In laboratory tests, the whole damage in skin was still taking place four hours after UV exposure was stopped.
"Half or more of this kind of DNA damage is not happening on the beach, it's on the car on the way home," Prof Brash said.
The team hope they can develop a sunscreen that combines the usual protection with absorbing any energy from the melanin.

Dr Bav Shergill, of the British Association of Dermatologists, said: "This research serves to reinforce current advice on sun protection, which is something I welcome."
He said that sunscreen should be used with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30 and good UVA protection, and that people should stay out of the sun between 1100 and 1500.
He added: "The researchers note that the time it takes between sun exposure and the damage being completely done gives a window of opportunity in which new preventative tools could work.
"This is an interesting concept. Whilst this does open future avenues for treatments, that could be a long way off. So in the meantime the public should focus on traditional sun protection methods."

On your Facebook feed: Your virtual reality experience?

By: Crypto Dina On: 11:00:00 PM

  • Forget plain, flat photos. In the future, Facebook wants you to share a 360˚ view of your exotic experiences too.

Facebook (FB, Tech30) is working on integrating virtual reality into your newsfeed. The company's head of product, Chris Cox, explained the company's vision Tuesday night at the Code/Media conference in Dana Point, California.
Cox said Facebook has even developed a few demo versions.
In one, users can be virtually inside the cockpit of an F/A-18 Hornet flying over Colorado with the Blue Angels, the U.S. Navy's flight demonstration squadron. In another, a person can be transported to Mongolia and be inside a tent with a woman cooking food and a fire nearby or check out the sweeping vista.
"Not a lot of people are going to get to Mongolia in their life. I've never been," he said. "You can look around. It's beautiful. And you immediately understand it's like one of these things ... the first time you're in it, you realize you're looking at the future."
And people can share their experiences on Facebook. Cox said it adds another dimension to what people are sharing already: photos, videos, text, ideas, thoughts.
Last year, Facebook spent $2 billion to buy startup Oculus VR, which makes a virtual reality headset with visuals and audio.
At the time, Zuckerberg said that Facebook would help accelerate Oculus' plans to make immersive games and environments.
"But this is just the start," Zuckerberg wrote. "After games, we're going to make Oculus a platform for many other experiences. Imagine enjoying a court side seat at a game, studying in a classroom of students and teachers all over the world or consulting with a doctor face-to-face -- just by putting on goggles in your home."
On Tuesday, Cox said he expects average Facebook users to take part in this.
"You'll do it, Beyoncé will do it," he joked.
But don't expect this to come out anytime soon. The Oculus Rift headset isn't even out yet for the general public, and there's no telling how popular (or expensive) it will be.
The wait time? "Probably a while," Cox said. "We're a long way away from everybody having those headsets."

CIA probes ISIS claim Jordanian airstrikes killed US aid worker

By: Crypto Dina On: 11:20:00 PM
  • Share The Gag

  • U.S. intelligence officials are investigating a claim by ISIS that its sole known remaining American hostage, an aid worker held for nearly a year and a half, has been killed, and the terrorist group's claim that her death came in a Jordanian airstrike, sources told Fox News.

Kayla Mueller, 26, whose identity had previously not been revealed at the request of the U.S. government and her family as the Pentagon worked to secure her, is believed to be the last American hostage the terrorist army is holding, since the beheading of Peter Kassig, a 26-year-old American aid worker, killed in November. In its statement, ISIS also claimed Mueller was the only person killed in the airstrike, claiming none of its fighters injured or killed.

“We are obviously deeply concerned by these reports," said National Security Council spokeswoman Bernadette Meehan. "We have not at this time seen any evidence that corroborates ISIL’s claim.”

Late Friday night, the Mueller family released a statement saying "we are still hopeful that Kayla is alive." Addressing those who held Kayla, her family said,"We have sent you a private message and ask that you respond to us privately. We know that you have read our previous communications."

Images of children suffering in the early stages of Syria's ongoing civil war prompted Mueller, 26, to leave her home in Prescott, Ariz., in December, 2012,  to work with the Danish Refugee Council and the humanitarian organization Support to Life to help refugees. According to a family spokesperson, Kayla found the work heartbreaking but compelling.

"For as long as I live, I will not let this suffering be normal, something we just accept," Mueller told her hometown newspaper, The Daily Courier, in a 2013 interview during a trip home to her family. "It's important to stop and realize what we have, why we have it and how privileged we are. And from that place, start caring and get a lot done."

She was captured on Aug. 4, 2013, in Aleppo, Syria, while leaving a Spanish hospital staffed by the international humanitarian group Doctors without Borders.

Unlike other Islamic State captives killed by the group after their ransom demands were spurned, Mueller has not been featured on any hostage videos in which the terror army's prisoners, under obvious duress, denounce the West and plead for their lives. In some cases, intelligence officials have determined the hostages were killed long before the Islamic State militants claimed, raising the possibility that Mueller was already dead.

"For as long as I live, I will not let this suffering be normal, something we just accept."

        - Kayla Mueller, 2013 interview

Just last Sunday, President Obama said the U.S. is doing everything it can to free Mueller.

"Obviously this is something that is heartbreaking for the family and we want to make sure we do anything we can to make sure that any American citizen is rescued from this situation," Obama told NBC in an interview that aired prior to the Super Bowl.

Jordan, which had previously taken part in U.S.-led airstrikes against Islamic State, stepped up its efforts on Wednesday, a day after the Islamic State released a horrifying video of a Jordanian air force pilot being burned to death in a cage. The Arab nation promptly hanged two terror suspects ISIS had sought to free and then, as King Abdullah II vowed to crush the terrorist army that has seized a bloody realm spanning parts of Syria and Iraq, mounted what it called devastating strikes against ISIS targets in Syria Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. It was in one of those strikes that Islamic State claims the woman was killed.

A Jordanian government spokesperson told Fox‎ News it is impossible to verify Mueller's death, but said officials are highly suspicious. The spokesman said he doesn't know what the hostage would have been doing in the location where the airstrike occurred.

Kayla Mueller, left, is pictured here in an undated photo.

Islamic State militants had demanded a $6 million ransom and the release of terrorist prisoners in exchange for Mueller. Among the prisoners Islamic State sought to trade for the woman was Aafia Siddiqui, a neuroscientist trained at MIT who was convicted of attempting to murder U.S. officials and planning to make dirty bombs for use in terror attacks in 2010.

According to Mueller's family, she graduated from Northern Arizona University in 2009, and planned to devote herself to humanitarian causes. From her college graduation through 2011, she lived and worked with humanitarian aid groups in northern India, Israel and Palestine. She returned home to Arizona in 2011, and worked for one year at an HIV/AIDS clinic while volunteering at a women’s shelter at night.

While her identity had not been reported in the media, friends, loved ones and officials in her home state have been comforting her family in recent months.

“While I have no new information today on Kayla’s current situation, I do know from speaking regularly with her family that she is extremely devoted to the people of Syria, and to doing all she can to alleviate the terrible suffering which has left more than 200,000 people dead and driven millions from homes into refugee status," said Den. John McCain, R-Ariz. "I also know that Kayla is extremely well-loved and dearly missed by her family and friends in Arizona."

If Mueller was indeed killed while held by ISIS, she would be the latest in a growing list of captives held until their deaths by the Islamist terror organization.

In August, an ISIS militant believed to be British and dubbed "Jihadi John" by the UK press, beheaded American freelance journalist James Foley in a video released online. That was followed by the similar, gruesome Sept. 2 murder of Steven Sotloff, another U.S. journalist who had written for Time magazine and other publications. Kassig was the last American known to have been killed by the barbaric group.

But Islamic State also beheaded two UK aid workers, David Haines, who was killed in September, and Alan Henning, who went to help refugees from Syria's bloody civil war, in October. Late last month, it released videos showing it had slaughtered two Japanese citizens, Haruna Yukawa, a self-employed security contractor, and Kenji Goto, a journalist.

  • First Rihanna swims with the sharks and now Jennifer Lawrence has a deadly snake wrapped around her naked body? It seems posing with deadly animals is all the rage in 2015.
In a photo shoot with Vanity Fair magazine, the 24-year-old "The Hunger Games" beauty doesn't seem bothered to have a strategically placed Colombian red-tailed boa constrictor draped over her. The publication cleverly refers to the image as "Girl Meets Boa."
VF notes that Lawrence did become "uncomfortable when the snake took a fancy to her neck."
The photo, taken by Patrick Demarchelier, is inspired by Richard Avedon's 1981 Vogue portrait of Nastassja Kinski. "Jennifer has the perfect combination of strength, sexuality and humor, and, above all, tomboy to pull this off," Vanity Fair's fashion and style director Jessica Diehl said of their decision to have Lawrence pose for the daring image.

Caffeine addicts! Eddie Murphy and model girlfriend Paige Butcher hold hands as they take their daily trip to coffee shop

  • They rarely go a day without paying a visit to a coffee shop.
And regulars Eddie Murphy and girlfriend Paige Butcher made their usual outing on Tuesday for a fix of their favourite roast.
The comedian, 53, held hands with the stunning Australian, 35, as they shunned their usual Coffee Bean for a visit to their local Starbucks in Los Angeles.
All eyes were on Eddie's gorgeous other half, who sported her casual best.

The lingerie model displayed her flawless face by slicking her honey locks back into a taut pony tail, with not a single fly-away to distract from her blemish-free complexion.

She flashed a sparkling smile while buttoned up in a tartan purple shirt and squeezed into a pair of very tight jeans. Eddie, meanwhile, carried his cup of Joe while sporting a grey shirt, slouchy jeans, and velcro trainers.

  • Facebook is to remind all UK adults on the social network to register to vote in a message that will appear in your newsfeed on Thursday.
The idea is to use peer pressure to encourage a better turnout on May 7.
The message - created with the Electoral Commission - will flag the fact that there are just 100 days until the UK General Election and that if you want to have your say you’ll need to have registered.
It links to the Gov.uk page that makes is super-simple to register online - you'll need to have your National Insurance number to hand, though. You can also register through the Mirror's own tool.
Facebook is a good tool for promoting voter registration as it has more monthly UK visitors (35 million) than people who turned out to vote in the last General Election (29 million).

Once you've registered, Facebook will give you the option to post a "Life Event" to your page telling your friends what you've done and further encouraging awareness.
When Facebook did something similar in the 2010 US elections, more than 300,000 additional people went to the polls after seeing conversations on the social network, according to one study.

TransAsia Turboprop ATR-72 Crashes Into Taiwan River, Killing 23

  • BEIJING - Rescuers scrambled to pull survivors from the wreckage of a plane that banked to the left, clipped an elevated highway and plunged into a river shortly after takeoff in Taiwan Wednesday.
A young child was among the passengers ferried to safety from the partially submerged TransAsia twin-engine ATR-72, which had just taken off from the capital, Taipei.
Taiwan's Civil Aeronautics Agency said 23 of the 58 passengers and crew on board were confirmed dead and 15 rescued, leaving 20 others unaccounted for.
Dramatic dashcam video showed the plane quickly losing altitude and turning almost 90 degrees to the left as it crossed the highway, clipping a taxi and the road surface with its wing before crashing into the Keelung River. Teams of rescuers in rubber rafts clustered around the wreckage of the aircraft, according to television pictures from scene. Some survivors swam to safety.

"The water is not clean, rescuers cannot see clearly underwater," a member of the fire rescue team told reporters at the scene. "The most important thing now is to drag the plane to the bank. They will dive into the water."
"I've never seen anything like this. This is unprecedented," a volunteer rescuer surnamed Chen said, according to Reuters.
Flight GE235 had just taken off from Songshan Airport, according to Ding-zhao Yi, an official with the New Taipei City Fire Department. The state-run Central News Agency said the flight was bound for Kinmen Airport in an outlying county just off the southeastern coast of China, and took off at 11:35 a.m Wednesday local time (10.35 p.m. Tuesday ET).
Zhiming Ling, bureau chief of the aviation agency, said the plane was less than a year old and had completed a round of safety checks on Jan. 26.
The plane's black boxes - the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder - were recovered, the agency said.
An unverified recording posted online appeared to show the pilot telling air traffic controllers that he was declaring an emergency because of an engine failure. "Mayday, mayday, engine flameout," the pilot purportedly tells controllers.
It was the second crash in little more than six months involving the same type of aircraft belonging to TransAsia. Another of the airline's ATR-72s crashed on a Taiwanese island, killing 48 people, in July.
The CEO of TransAsia, Xinde Chen, apologized for accident and thanked authorities for their help.
He said 31 of the passengers were Chinese nationals from mainland China, including three children. The remaining passengers were Taiwanese nationals, including one child, he said.
